Reasons To Stop Smoking

Posted by – March 28, 2011

So you want to stop smoking. It is good to take some time first to ask yourself why. The reasons why you want to stop can be a very strong incentive and motivation for you. And if you do not have enough reasons in mind, here is a list of common reasons to give you inspiration.

  1. Your health. You may be getting warning signs already, like a morning cough, struggling to walk up stairs like you used to, varicose veins, heart trouble, or worse. Or perhaps you have a history of heart attacks, strokes, or lung cancer in your family.
  2. If you have them, your children. If they are young, it is not good to subject them to either cigarette smoke or addictive behavior. If they are grown-up, you want to live long enough to see them settled and happy. For example, you may wish to see your children married, or be there to help with the grandchildren.
  3. Wrinkles. This is especially so with women, who can look many years older if they smoke. If I say ¨smokers face¨, most people know exactly what I mean. It is not a good look.
  4. Your teeth. You may have to always whiten them, and then there is that smell in your mouth that you just cannot seem to get rid of.
  5. Money. Do you realize that you are actually paying to die, possibly slowly and painfully? Imagine saving all that money starting tomorrow. How much will you have saved in a year´s time? How much would that be with interest if you put it in a simple savings account? How would you feel if you had that money in your hand in cash right now? It feels good, doesn´t it?
  6. Getting married. If you are getting married, it is a great opportunity to start afresh with a new beginning.
  7. That awful smell. Your colleagues may look away when you open your mouth to speak or hold their breath when you pass by their desk. Your child, niece, nephew, or grandchild may ask you why you smell like that. How very embarrassing!
  8. Pregnancy. If you are planning to get pregnant, you certainly do not want your fetus to smoke. And if you are a man planning children, did you know the quality of your sperm gets better 6 months after you have stopped smoking? Now that is certainly food for thought.
  9. Habit. It is simply a nasty habit, an addiction that you are a slave to. It will be so nice to break free from its confines. Enough is enough.
  10. How many years, months, weeks, and days have you been on this constant treadmill of smoke, smoke, and smoke?

Armed with these reasons, and maybe a few more of your own, now you have plenty of motivation to quit. Whether you quit the pharmaceutical, alternative, complementary, cold turkey, or any other way, I wish you every success.

Is EFT Tapping an Instant Cure from Smoking?

Posted by – November 19, 2010

EFT, which stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques, is a great tool that helps you help yourself. It is used for almost any physical or emotional condition. And it works relatively quickly. Because of that, and because professionals using it want to encourage others to use it, it is mainly the stories about fast recovery that abound on the internet and in the press. For example, most ex-smokers that I have helped in the UK to quit did so in one session with EFT and did not need to use EFT for smoking again; and I wrote about it to encourage others to quit. This leaves some users disappointed, as they think that the EFT is not working and give up. For example, about 70% quit in one session and 30% came back for more sessions. There was nothing wrong with the 30%. Not at all. They just had more blocks in their path that we needed to remove with EFT, and that´s perfectly OK.

Let me give an analogy. Most of us have used headache pills or powders at various points in our lives. And most people have a bottle or box of pain-relief pills in their home. The reason is that we might need them. And in that case, we might just pop a pill and the pain would go away and we would just get on with whatever it is we need to do. And I know that for a lot of us who prefer holistic alternative health, popping pills is not the answer, but hey, there were times when I have just wanted a pill and so took one. What I am trying to say is that as a society, we think nothing of taking a pill for a headache or other pain if needed. And that we do so because it works. We know it works, because the pain goes away, and then we can get on with our lives.

Let me show you this from a slightly different angle. We take a pill for a headache, and it makes the headache go away, and we accept that. And even though that particular headache is gone, we still keep a stock of pills available. And we never even question why. It is obvious; we keep a stock of pain-relief tablets in case we get another pain later that we need to quickly get rid of. And that, realistically speaking, is OK. We are happy with that.

But let me ask you about another scenario. We get a physical or emotional pain, use EFT on it, and it goes away. Some people then become very surprised if that pain comes back, and then say the EFT did not work. But they are still happy to take a painkiller, even though they have taken many before in their life and the pain came back!

And just like the pain tablets do work, so does EFT!

Additionally, just like the pain may re-appear or a different pain may appear, we think nothing of taking another pain-killer. And so we should think nothing of using EFT again either!

Now, I am neither advocating taking pain-killers nor pushing doing EFT instead of taking a pain-killer. What I am saying here is look at the way we happily consider pain-killers effective, even though we may have to take them again on another occasion, and that we should look at EFT in the same light. Despite whatever anyone promises you about EFT, yes, most of the things that are said about its quickness and effectiveness are totally true, but it is a tool that can be used over and over again for many physical and emotional issues, and it is OK to keep using it on one issue for a few months before a more permanent solution is found. And even then, we are continually exposed to emotional hurt and physical mishaps, so it makes sense that we continue using EFT in our lives; just like most of us use that handy headache tablet.

EFT Tapping is a great way to release the vast majority of physical or emotional conditions gently and effectively. If it is new to you, you can download a free guide from many online resources and find out more for yourself. Or you can dive right in and work with an experienced practitioner.

NLP and Hypnotherapy Modeling To Stop Smoking

Posted by – October 22, 2010

In NLP and Hypnosis it is a good common practice to model successful people to see what they are doing that makes them successful. And you may well say that these people are successful just because of their genes or because it is them. But you see, it is not that those successful people are better than the rest of us, but that in one particular area of their life that we are trying to emulate, they have it easy. No matter what the rest of their lives looks like, in that one area they achieve success without even thinking about it. Now we need to ask the question: What do those people do to become successful in that area that I can do to become successful too? And you can stop smoking by asking yourself what it is about people who have never smoked and are happy not smoking; what do they do that you can do?

One stop-smoking client answered this question for me very eloquently. She said that her husband, who has never smoked, usually speaks his mind, and sometimes gets angry or sulks, and then when he is happy, he thinks nothing of jumping up in the air or doing a little dance. She was actually not deliberately answering the question of why he was successful at being a non-smoker. She was complaining that he did not keep his emotions under super-tight control! I said to her that this is exactly what she should explore in herself, why she has to appear in control at all times and why she has to drug her emotions with nicotine. I explained that her husband is simply sharing his feelings and expressing himself, rather than forcing himself to keep a tight lid on them, and that is why he does not need a drug called nicotine, as he does not have a need to appear unemotional all the time.

The need to appear unemotional is one aspect of smoking. Sometimes, this need is not an over-the-top unnatural need, but a need to remain in control whilst some pretty scary emotions are threatening to come to the surface. And then, we can ask ourselves, what does a non-smoker do in these cases? Well, they deal with those emotions, so that there is no need to drug themselves with nicotine. Some take medication from the doctor for say, anxiety or depression, some go to a psychotherapist on a weekly basis, and some investigate some great new methods for release, such as Emotional Freedom Techniques, and let go of those overwhelming negative emotions forever.

Tapping, otherwise known as Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT, is a great way to release any emotional blocks in your way. And then you too can act like a non-smoker and so feel as relaxed as a non-smoker and become finally a calm non-smoker yourself. And the greatest benefit is that you can be totally in charge of the process itself.

Israeli Researchers Say Smoking Is A Habit Not An Addiction – Why I Disagree

Posted by – October 12, 2010

Israeli researchers have carried out a simple research monitoring cravings of smokers and have concluded quite correctly in my opinion that the hold nicotine has on people is psychological and not physical as in the sense of a heroin addiction.

However, the researchers have gone further and said that just because the need for smoking is psychological, then smoking is not an addiction. I disagree and would challenge this view of addiction.

There are many different addictions that grip the user and hold them hostage. Some involve no substance abuse at all. One example that comes to mind is co-dependency. This is when a person is attracted to destructive relationships. Amongst those are relationships with a physically abusive partner, a partner who continually cheats and is disrespectful, a partner who harms the children of their lover, and various other permutations. It is hard to call such a destructive way of life just a habit. I agree with practitioners who call such destructive behavior an addiction.

An addiction may well be physical, however what all addictions have in common is the psychological addiction. This even applies to heroin. For example, it was noticed that soldiers returning from Vietnam who had become addicted to heroin whilst in combat had a relatively good ability to stop becoming addicts afterwards, compared to the average civilian heroin addict. One may well say that the combat situation was temporary, whereas what normally attracts a user to heroin is pre-existing emotional reasons. And we all read about stars who go to rehab, are clean for years, and then suddenly get re-addicted.

In other words, it is important for us to recognize that despite any physiological effects of a drug, it is the emotional part that really makes the addiction. Pretending that the compelling emotional pull of a destructive behavior is just a habit is belittling the real reasons behind a serious addiction and belittling the real misery and ill-health suffered by countless addicts worldwide as a result.

In terms of energy psychology, an addictive craving is the result of an anxiety caused by a disruption of the subtle energy system of the mind-body. When we release this energy disruption, this anxiety is released and the cravings disappear. EFT, short for Emotional Freedom Techniques, often better known as Tapping, is a great way to release this energy disruption gently and effectively. It can be self-applied or the smoker can dive right in and work with an experienced practitioner.

How To Release The Need To Be Perfect And Stop Smoking

Posted by – October 12, 2010

An unhealthy need to be perfect may seem just a drive for excellence, but there is a difference. It is one thing to aim to get things right and be the best you can be, and quite another to feel under constant pressure to perform. And the stress of this pressure keeps many a perfectionist smoker struggling in vain to give up.

And most smokers with an unhealthy need to be perfect do not recognize where this difference lies. Typically, they report having a need to smoke or a habit of smoking. Part of the unhealthy need to be perfect I the denial of imperfection. However, there is a way to find out, and there is a solution.

To find out if you have this unhealthy need, simply ask yourself how true this statement is:

I must always be perfect.
Rate the Validity Of Cognition, or truth value of this statement from a 10 to zero, where 10 is totally true and zero is totally false.

If this statement is anything above a zero, then you have just found one big emotional belief that blocks your stop-smoking success. You can now release this belief with effective modern energy psychology methods such as EFT. As you EFT this statement, you may gain many insights and have events come up for healing. This is a great opportunity to release those insidious drivers of smoking that lurk under the surface.

The best results are achieved after every aspect of this statement is tapped down to a zero. And then, you will find quitting smoking a much easier process.
